The legacies of Peggy Ruth Smith
The legacies left behind from Peggy Ruth Smith or Mom lives in her 5 children and 2 beautiful grandchildren. Mom, or affectionately called "tough old bird" engrained in each of her children the importance of being close as a family. Albeit our family is somewhat small, her steadfast belief that siblings must remain together is with us until this day. Mom also had a wicked sense of humor, always finding ways to laugh at herself without destroying her self-esteem. She used to joke with us that she was stranded from another planet and the spaceship left her behind in the "projects." We used to joke with her about that, but somehow Mom was other-wordly and beautiful just on her own. She is and was a remarkable woman, always treated her children and grandchildren with the utmost respect and pride. In our household, we were surrounded with books, art books, educational materials to bolster and pique our interest in learning about the world around us. From this exposure my brother Hiram was reading by the age of three; shocking the pre-school teacher something fierce! All of her children graduated from high school amongst the Herculean malestrom of negativity surrounding us. All five of her children also attended college, never engaged in negative behavior or people and always treated ourselves and others with respect. Another apsect of Mom's legacy lives within her strength. Mom did not grow up in the most functional household, but through strenght of character and knowing herself, she perservered. This she passed down to her children to face our fears and notions of not being good enough. We all worked hard to spoil our mother when we grew into adulthood, anything that she wanted, we would save and get for her. Her greatest legacy was the fact that all of her children loved her dearly and communicated with her everyday she was and still is our rock and our pillar to love and to look up to forever.
